Biography

Prof. Dr. med. Oliver Tobolski has been practicing in Cologne since 2001 with special focus on sports orthopedics and traumatology. In 2010 he founded SPORTHOMEDIC – a clinic with eight medical specialists, specialized in degenerative joint disease, specifically of the knee, the ankle and the shoulder joint; a further focus of treatment is foot and hand surgery, pediatric orthopedics, and joint replacement (particularly in the knee).

Oliver Tobolski teaches as professor at the Deutsche Hochschule für Prävention und Gesundheitsmanagement (college for prevention and health care management). He is married and father of two children. His Credo: Move more. His principle: Help immobile people become mobile again.

The physician who was born in the Rhineland studied in Bonn, Montpellier and in Aachen. He passed his third state examination at the Faculty of Medicine of the University in Bonn. What is the best treatment of sports injuries? Can strain injuries be prevented? Which type of movement is important and why? Whatever there is that everyday athletes can learn from professional sports – this is what Oliver Tobolski teaches. And his lessons are also important for children and their parents because: What you don’t learn at a young age will become difficult to learn later in life.

Teaching & Research

Since 2011 Oliver Tobolski has been teaching at the Deutsche Hochschule für Prävention und Gesundheitsmanagement. His lectures are part of the medical education for sports economics and health care management. “Occupational healthcare” has emerged as an important topic. Previously Prof. Tobolski worked as researcher and teacher at the Rheinische Fachhochschule Köln and the Deutsche Sporthochschule Köln.

His research at the Rheinische Fachhochschule was focused on the economic evaluation of conservative and surgical treatment methods. The field of medical economics deals in particular with the economic evaluation of medical therapy options. Thus Oliver Tobolski imparted his knowledge on optimization processes in the healthcare sector to future medical economists: How can a consistent high quality of medical care be maintained at lower costs? This question poses a central issue that will remain urgent and relevant, particularly against the background of increasing financial curtailments in the healthcare sector. The focus lied on those therapies that are the most effective considering the financial expense.

The teaching assignment at the Deutsche Sporthochschule Köln included the further education of students, particularly in the field of sports physiotherapy. Oliver Tobolski taught the students innovative techniques in surgical orthopedics, contributed significantly to the development of the master’s program for sports economy, which today is the only study program for graduates in physical therapy. He participated in the accreditation process and worked as module commissioner until 2011.

In addition Oliver Tobolski is engaged in the education of top trainers and works as lecturer in the training of physical therapists to become specialized sports physiotherapists. As an expert he supports clinical trials of renowned healthcare companies, e.g. to test the impact of specific orthoses/bandages on the gait.

Oliver Tobolski has visited numerous experts in the fields of sports orthopedics and traumatology for job shadowing in Germany and abroad. He spent part of his study years in France. During his residency and afterwards he was in the US and in Germany working with leading orthopedic surgeons to receive training in the most advanced techniques and to extend his knowledge in this field. Today young physicians visit him for job shadowing to extend their knowledge.

Focus

Solving sports medical challenges quickly and using the latest techniques and procedures
Treating sports injuries conservatively if suitable or surgically if needed – this is the goal of Oliver Tobolski. He imparts his knowledge in practice (http://www.sporthomedic.de) and in theory. His long years of experience in the treatment of top athletes helped him accumulate extensive knowledge about the best therapy of sports injuries and their prevention. It doesn’t matter whether only a muscle is injured, a complex injury of the ankle, knee or shoulder joint is present, or if athletes want to make use of Prof. Tobolski’s experience to increase their own performance.

People consult him especially for his farsightedness regarding necessary rehabilitation procedures after a surgical intervention, and for his experience regarding the prevention of injuries. Top athletes from various fields of sports (stop-and-go, weight training) with different rehabilitation requirements and very high demands do not only receive quick and adequate treatment and rehabilitation, they also learn how they can manage their orthopedic training program and exercise load better in order to build up muscles, to protect their body and to avoid potential injuries. Oliver Tobolski’s medical expertise also helps patients without acute problems increase their performance (e.g. trunk rotation/stabilization, adjustment of training/rehabilitation to known deficiencies in the muscles) – a service that numerous performance orientated athletes and/or their trainers and managers already benefit from.

Another key issue is the physiotherapeutic follow-up treatment, especially in consideration of new exercise plans. Oliver Tobolski holds the position of a professor at the Deutsche Hochschule für Prävention und Gesundheitsmanagement and shares his knowledge in lectures and presentations as today more and more companies have become aware: The performance of their employees is based on a healthy body.

The focus lies on intensive and gentle diagnostics. The diagnostic procedures are developed together with the patient and will indicate suitable treatment strategies. A central element is the extensive consultation – Oliver Tobolski is specialized in working together with athletes to find solutions for their individual medical conditions. Training and competition schedules are to be considered, chosen therapies are reviewed regularly.
