Autohemotherapy / ACP-therapy
Overview of the advantages of the ACP therapy
- Utilisation of regeneration power produced naturally within the body
- Recommended for light to mediate arthrosis and acute and chronic syndromes of tendon pain, (e.g. Achilles tendon, patellar tendon)
- Concentration of growth factors in the blood
- No side effects due to use of autologous healing mechanisms
- Safe procedure through special syringe
Arthrosis – who is affected and why?
The term arthrosis describes signs of degeneration of the articular cartilage.
The ageing process and genetic predisposition on the one hand and chronically excessive stress and knock-knees/bowlegs on the other hand are factors that contribute to the progressive degradation and eventual loss of the articular cartilage.
Are you affected as well?
One of the typical medical conditions or symptoms of arthrosis is discomfort such as an uncomfortable tearing in the joint and morning stiffness (ankylosis). Also typical is a so-called start-up pain which fades after a short walking distance.
Further, a typical characteristic at the start of arthrosis is pain when climbing up the stairs. If in addition an inflammation occurs, one speaks of an “activated arthrosis“.
Injuries of tendon or ligament, syndromes of tendon pain – often athletes are affected
Pain of the patellar and Achilles tendons are the most frequent medical conditions which in particular affect athletes and require longer training and competition breaks. Joggers and “stop and go” athletes (e.g. football, handball or tennis players) are equally affected. Especially in the event of a chronic condition an ACP therapy can be advisable. There is no risk of damage to the tendon with an increased danger of a rupture such as in case of cortisone infiltration. Various athletic injuries can be treated more effectively with ACP.
A new therapy method
The treatment with autolog conditioned plasma (ACP) constitutes a new treatment method for the therapy of joint trouble that is due to wear. For some time, it has been known that the growth factors contained in the human blood can positively influence different healing processes. The ACP therapy is based on this knowledge. Healing and build-up processes in the damaged articular cartilage and tendon tissue can be stimulated by means of highly concentrated growth factors in the blood (from thrombocytes or blood platelets). First clinical results show a significant improvement with regard to the process of pain and to mobility.
How does an ACP therapy proceed?
A small amount of blood is taken from the vein in the arm. A special separation procedure extracts the part of the blood which contains regenerative and arthrosis-inhibiting components naturally produced in the body. The solution thereby obtained is re-injected into the affected joint by means of a specifically-developed double syringe (Arthrex Double Syringe). This newly-developed double chamber system guarantees a sterile extraction and a sterile injection of the growth factors and thereby provides the highest safety possible.
When can the ACP therapy help?
The ACP therapy is recommendable in case of painful light to medium arthrosis (arthrosis grade I-III). A significant abatement can also be achieved in case of tendinitis.
